How it all began
The Long Lake Hounds grew out of the much older Long Lake Trails Association. Members met by the shores of Long Lake and larked through autumn color in Wolsfeld Woods and across paneled fields: The Leon Warner family, John and Sage Cowles, Grace Lindley, Leonard Carpenter, Jim Binger, The Wakefield family, Stanley Dwinnell, and more plus those soon to be Joint Masters - Stuart Wells, Betsy Poole, and Peggy Steiner. The last organized hunt in Minnesota folded at World War II and we yearned to hunt again. The Long Lake Trails Association launched our first pack with family pets…bloodhounds.
In 1957, John Daniels, arranged for a draft of 3 couple of Penn-Marydel Foxhounds from the Sewickley Hunt. Large and only a bit faster than bloodhounds, they were perfect. They were kenneled at Gem Lake Farm, near White Bear Lake. In 1958 we hunted our home farm territory around Gem Lake with visiting Long Lake Trails friends. By 1959 it was smooth transition – the Long Lake Trails Association became the Long Lake Hounds. The Daniels family whipped in for John Daniels. The warmth of families and friendships lasted many years. Marty Daniels succeeded John Daniels as Joint Master
and of all the happy memories it was a special delight to call all children to ride up and share hilltop views of hounds in full cry.
